 APOSTROPHE

The apostrophe is a very small thing and it would be alright if we will use this (') small sign anywhere. But this misconception can be very dangerous as well as disastrous. This small sign can make a big difference. It can change the meaning of the word completely. An apostrophe is used in many places for different purposes. So, while using the Apostrophe sign be careful. It can differentiate between Accents and pronunciation.
The main uses of Apostrophe are:
  • It is used to show Contraction in words which means Shortening of words by omitting letters from the word.
  • The second use of the apostrophe is to show Possession which is used to show the Ownership of something.

CONTRACTION

Contraction is a term that means Dropping or Removing some letters from the word. By which word will become Short. In writing, the apostrophe is used to show the exact place of missing letters. It is directly related to the tone of speaking.

It is generally used in the informal way of writing or speaking in normal conversation. There is a big role of an apostrophe in Time-saving. Nowadays It is sure that while conversation person will use contracted words in their conversation. It is a trend in the current era.

It is normally used in writing dialogs or something which is informally written. The contraction will not be used in the official work which appears to be professional in any sense like offer letters, bonds, academic papers, etc.

It usually takes place with helping verbs and auxiliary verbs. It omits one or more than one letter from the word and creates a contraction place and an apostrophe is being inserted.
For Example: 
You're my friend means You are my friend.
 What's your name? It means What is your name?

Contraction of I am is I'm.

POSSESSION
 
Possession means the Ownership of something. To show possession the apostrophe is used to show the belongings to someone. It takes place with the noun like animal, place, countries, or anything. It indicates the relationship between the thing and the person.


In Singular nouns, by adding only one (s) at the end of the word,  and we can show the relationship between the thing and the person, it belongs to.
For Example;
 A ship's captain-We means that the captain belongs to the ship.
My mother's phone- We mean that the phone belongs to my mother.
Dog's tail- We mean that tail belongs to the dog.

Sometimes it is possible that a singular noun ends with s or es, in that case, the apostrophe is added after the word to show the relationship between the thing and person.

ITS OR IT'S
CONTRACTION:-   It's a long ride to the beach.
POSSESSION:-   I saw a bag on the sidewalk. I looked around for its owner.
 
YOUR OR YOU'RE
CONTRACTION:- You're going to be late.
  Is this your book?

WHOSE OR WHO'S
CONTRACTION:- Who's that person standing next to the car.
POSSESSION:- Whose purse is this?

THEIR, THEY'RE OR THERE
CONTRACTION:- They're on the way to the airport.
 Their daughter is studying in Grade 5.
