English is said to be a funny language. Because there is no rules and regulation fixed for this. No one knows what will happen next with the sounds of the letters. Like all letters of the English alphabet is having their own sounds and particular roles are divided among them. still many times it happens that they become soundless or silent. Yes, it's true and amazing. SILENT LETTERS are those letters that are physically present in the word but they don't make any sound. While pronouncing they become absent means null. 

• It differs on the bases of pronunciation and accent. Some people speak the sound of the silent letter also. Because it is in there native language.
• There is some combination of letters on which some rule applies.
• It usually happens when there is a cluster of consonants like in CHRISTMAS, T becomes silent. And sometimes with digraph like GH in LIGHT, GH is silent.
• In American English means, the US removes silent letters from the spellings. For example PROGRAM, the exact spelling is Programme, same as in CATALOG, exact spelling is catalogue. 
• It creates a lot of confusion among the readers and the writers.
•  But by practicing and used to with the silent letters will make you fluent and confident while speaking English.

• When G and N are together G will be silent. Like this (GN)
• When M and N are together N will be silent. Like this(MN)
